Holy Thursday reflection

A Time for Holiness

Today we start a series of celebrations that introduce us into the deepest mystery of our faith. Mystery here does not mean something secret, kept away from us. Mystery because it is a reality that must be discovered by each one with a personal journey of faith. The teacher can teach the disciple the content, but only the disciple can experience the meaning of faith for him/her.

We open the Triduum with a special Eucharistic celebration. Traditionally this is seen as a celebration of priesthood. Unfortunately, many Christians identify this with the priesthood of priests ….. The Vatican Council II taught us that all Christians share in the priesthood of Christ. So tonight we celebrate our common priesthood. When Jesus invited the community to ‘do this in memory of me’ he did not speak only to those who would be ordained minister in the church. He spoke to the community. All of us have to become celebrants of the Eucharist and live Eucharist lives. It is not by chance that the gospel of tonight will not speak of the institution of the Eucharist, but will show us Jesus washing the feet of the Apostles. To live a Eucharistic life means to become Servant Leaders, ready to wash the feet of each other.

On Good Friday we shall celebrate the Passion, which culminates in Jesus’ death. We need to refocus on Jesus’ death. Remember he did not die, he was killed! It is quite different. Jesus accepted death, and death by the cross. He accepted the incarnation totally, and shared our human life to the point of dying as the worst criminal. He really shared our human nature even to the lowest level of humanity. Thus, his Resurrection embraces all. His remaining in the tomb for ‘three days’ has a theological meaning. Count, and you will see that there are no three days ….. In the Bible, the number three means the time needed to accomplish something. So when we say Jesus was in the tomb for three days, we actually mean that he shared death fully, and that his Resurrection is not a trick or a rouse to convince the gullible. Jesus experience death and, because of his faithfulness to the Father’s plan, he rose to new life. This is also a promise for our own death and resurrection.

Saturday Night and Easter day we shall celebrate the empty tomb. He who died he is now alive! It is the culmination of the Easter event: Christ’s triumph over death, which gives the whole Gospel message its positive character of joy and victory. This message is particularly important today, when we are living a situation of unclear future, of fear and experience our powerlessness facing a virus that we cannot control.

If we allow ourselves to be fully involved in the celebrations of these days, the gaze of faith is renewed: we can then measure the splendour of grace, and understand ‘the inestimable richness of the Baptism that purified us, of the Spirit that regenerated us, of the blood that redeemed us’ (Easter Sunday, Prayer II). And with faith, the whole of existence is renewed: we walk ‘in the newness of life’ (Rom 6:4), as on a spring morning.

May God help us live fully this Triduum and guide us to a deeper understanding of our faith. Happy Easter to all.
